Do you take a long time before asking someone for forgiveness? Do you ask sometimes just to make amends or is there always true sincerity?

I was abused as a child and I still haven't forgiven them even tho my husband has and that makes me mad and I know it shouldn't cause hes just doing what God wants him to do but I feel like he is taking my grandfathers side and not mind. Does that make sense? I know its stupid and I should get over it and just forgive him but I feel if I forgive him, he wins. :(

Well asking forgiveness is always hard. To be honest, I've been struggling with a similar situation to AW. But, I've found the courage to set aside my pride and just said I forgive you, No it's not like it never comes back and creeps in my head saying what bad stuff they have done. I think I just did realize that it cost me more to not forgive then to forgive.

Oh and yes I do ask forgiveness to my idea I only do it sincerely because otherwise it has no use. I often know when i did it wrong so I just muster up the courage ask as soon as the anger or frustration has settled down.

Well asking gets less and less hard though forgiving people can still be hard for me, depending on the subject. I know that it shouldn't be but well sometimes..

It is sad but I have not talked to my brother for a few years.. (too complicated to explain) but he living in the next town over.. I decided that life is too short... and I decided one day that I woiuld call and talk to him.. well it so happens he was thinking the same.. so we decided to met up and talk face to face about the past and now I am so very happy that I have done this.. he is my only brother and what a life would it be if (since both parents are deceased) if I went on living without the thought of seeing him.. I had already met up with my neice when I went down to state to visit my own son..I decided that I wanted to touch bases with her before .. things were all cleared up with us getting together and so much laughter was there.. So Yes it did take me a long time to step forward but I am so happy that I did and I now see my brother and sister in law all the time.. when I want to call them I feel that I can.. and thank goodness the bond was there from the onset... Miscommunication is a hard thing to talk about and we did it all.. I can now say I can lay my head down in peace ...

I don't think I can forgive 70 times 7. The atrocities I see against Christians in muslim countries is something only God can forgive because I can't. Will I die and go to hell for that?

What has helped me with forgiveness is understanding the doctrine of sin. Understanding how sinful I am, and how undeserving of forgiveness, helps me to forgive what amounts to minor offenses in comparison.

I struggled for a long time until I came to the realization that it made me mad and made me feel bad and the other person didnt feel a thing so yes it does hurt me and through forgiveness I can heal and move on if it is sincere.

The purpose of forgiveness is not so that we can feel better. That should not be our motivation. That's looking inward and not upward. We should forgive out of gratitude that we have been forgiven.

I agree with Hammster even though it makes us feel better ;) We shouldnt forgive because we feel better. Forgiveness is something that you do through the grace that has been given to God. He loved us so much that he died on a cross for us and we weren't worthy of that. But yet he did and that should inspire us to forgive.

agreed, it can be a real struggle at times and that is what helped me to forgive.

Sometimes it is very hard to ask for forgiveness and takes time to get to the point of asking. Other times it is easier. I think it can depend on the depth of hurt and pain involved as to how long it takes.

I think forgiving can be a lot harder than asking for forgiveness

I'm much better at apologizing than I am asking for forgiveness.

I apologize but don't really ask for forgiveness.

I would do it unless I felt sincere.
