Back in 2017 Trump imposed a 20% tariff on Canadian lumber claiming unfair trade practices. Canada immediately appealed to the World Trade Organization. In earlier this year the WTO ruled that the tariffs were illegal and ordered them removed. Going back several decades this has happened five times before and Canada has win every single time.
So the USA has appealed the decision back to the WTO appeals board. The USA has apparently forgotten that earlier this year Trump refused to appoint new members to the WTO thus rendering the appeals process impossible.
At this point then the USA government has collected about $3 billion in tariffs now ruled illegal. But wait. who pays those tariffs? They are paid by the US purchaser not by the Canadian supplier. This has the effect of making the cost of a new build house in the USA Up to $10,000 more than it should be otherwise.
Way to go Donald.
