When I lived in Niagara Falls, NY, I'd have to say the
Blizzard of '77. A couple dozen people died in this storm that dropped a ton of snow in the midst of 50-60 mph winds, piling snow up to 40 feet in areas and burying cars & houses. Wind chill temps were well below zero for days. Got 2 weeks off of school though!
In SoCal, I'd have to say the
Cedar Fire of '03. Came up against a wall of flame on our way to church that Sunday morning. Most of our church had to evacuate and one family lost their home. 15 people died in that fire, which was the largest on record until the insane fires the past two years here in California. The ash rained down for weeks.
