I had a Windows update yesterday that took over an hour to complete.

What's the longest period of time a windows update has taken?

Been a Linux user for many years now. There are updates like Windows, but you can ignore them. The updates are not only for system type files, but when I'm reminded, I get notified for all other software updates as well. I left it for probably 8 months or more, and when I finally did an update for everything, took about an hour.

Not sure if it's comparable though, since like I said the update was for basically every piece of software I've ever downloaded, not just system stuff.

I've had really long Windows updates, but it's been a year or two since I had that hour long one. I guess you're warning us that the next one is coming? Most of the time they take about 20 minutes for me.

The worst thing is that they give no indication of how long an update will take. You just get the option "update and shut down" or "shut down", and it's hard to decide whether to install the update now when you don't know if it will take 5 minutes or 5 hours. An "update and restart" is great but if I've got work to do I'd really like to know if the update is going to leave my computer out of action for an hour or more.

I have read that the final Win update is done on Win 10 with exceptions of security releases. In the year 2025, Microsoft will end any support for Win 10 forcing Win 11 upon us.

That will be neat. There's no "forcing" Windows 11 - you can use Windows 10 without regular updates. I used Windows XP for a long time before shifting to 7, and only moved from 7 to 10 when some software I use regularly stopped supporting Win7.

I don't imagine I'll be updating to 11 until I need to, which is unrelated to when Microsoft decides I should.
