A surprising number of industries, from embroidery to aviation, still use floppy disks. But the supply is finally running out. (More)

Do you have a disk drive on your Laptop/PC? Do you use it?

I no longer have a floppy disk drive on my system. I have an old computer that has one that I can use when necessary though and most of my old commissioned portraits are stored on floppies.

I held onto floppy drives for a long time. Being the techie guy that people would often come to for help it was handy to be able to handle older media formats.

It's been so long since I've needed to use a floppy disk that my laptop (12 years old) doesn't have a floppy drive. My desktop (slightly older, virtually never used any more) may have one but I haven't used the computer in so many years I forget.

The only piece of equipment I have that has one of these drives is my electric keyboard. I don't use the drive because it has ceased to function properly. Not to be pedantic, but the disc shown isn't really a floppy, these small discs succeeded the actual floppy discs that were actually aptly named.

The soft-sided 5 1/4" floppies were actually quite flexible. The full-size 8" floppies sometimes needed two hands to put them into a drive.

I remember the days of having a total capacity of 140kb on a floppy, and a second drive being a luxury.
