From another thread this statement was posed:
The trouble with the "we do absolutely nothing" is that it literally turns the Bible into a waste of paper, describing a deity who spent thousands of years wasting his breath handing out instructions of how we should live when nothing makes any difference.
The Holy Bible was not given to tell us just how to live our lives. It's about God saving His Children by grace through faith, trusting in Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins so we could have eternal life.
And yet we do see that the Holy Bible tells us how we are to live our lives...obeying God's Law which is itself Good and Holy. So why is that if it's not to gain something from God such as eternal life? Eternal life is not something we earn but it's a gift from God, freely given by Him and solely by His efforts, not ours.
So why obey God's Law if it doesn't give us something in return? That type of question should right there show you that obeying to receive something first off isn't by grace and secondly is free. Does God need us to obey? No. But we obey God's Law as believers because it is good and holy, reflective of who HE is. It shows our love for Him. And not only that but it shows our love to our neighbors. Two of the biggest commandments Jesus spoke of was Loving God and our Neighbors.
You see it isn't a waste of time to live our lives as God wants us to live. It doesn't earn us eternal life, for Jesus did that, but our neighbors benefit greatly when we try not to break God's commandments. That is never a waste of time.
