This is probably answering a different question, but I much prefer the BBC filmed version over the Disney version, though I think Disney did a great job of not corrupting the story. I just find the special effects way overdone in the Disney set.
But to your question, which book, oh I would have to go back over the synopses of each to be sure, but I think the first one might be my favorite.
