Give them water and food, I have never crossed a homeless person who was awake, in Austin they tend to sleep a lot so I leave what I can with the one who has the least.

I haven't found a way to differentiate between the person who is begging as a lifestyle choice and the person who is begging out of desperation. I've seen enough examples of the former that I tend to be less inclined to give to random people on the street, so usually I don't think much about a homeless person any more than I think about anyone else I see in the street.

Sometimes I think that was once someone’s baby that may have once been loved and cherished and how did it come to this?

The trouble is you can never know. It might be someone whose live just took a catastrophic turn, it might be someone who made some bad decisions and paid the price, it might be someone who just feels like begging because it pays better than any job they might find.

My first thought is that there are jobs everwhere they should go get one and work.

I give them their drug money. Maybe a little extra for booz. You know that’s what they’re spending it on.

At our local Walmart I've been hit up for "gas money" several times. I usually tell them to pull their car to the pumps at the Murphy station that is in the Walmart parking lot and I will buy them some gas. Of the 3-4 times this has happened only one person let me buy them gas. The others just shrugged (and in one case cussed at me) and walked off.

The one time I did purchase gas there were children in the car so I filled it all the way up instead of getting them $20 of gas like I told him I would.

I'm more than willing to help the homeless who are truly in a bad situation and are looking for help out of their situation.

what is your first thought?

I don't have any first thoughts or judgements. I was homeless several times in young adulthood, and the reasons were varied. People who imagine it's an easy life have never been there.

what is your first thought?
First thought: ‘I wonder if he is one of the people that keep robbing the storage facility near my work?’
(I once thought they were harmless and felt sorry for them, then I learned the statistics on how much crime they are responsible for.)

My second thought: Ephesians 4:28 and 2 Thessalonians 3:10

(We need to “teach men to fish” more and “give men a fish” less.)
