I have all my old phones. They're so old no recycling place would want them.

With iPhones you bring your old phone to the apple store (or mail it in) and they'll give you a couple hundred dollars off the purchase of your next phone. If you do the mail-in option then you'll have to buy your new phone at full price and you'll get a refund of a couple hundred dollars once they've received your phone in the mail and processed it.
