When you are driving your car, how do you deal with the car behind you who insists on driving way too close to the back end of your car? If you had to suddenly hit your brakes for any reason, he would slam into your car.

I sometimes go slower so that they pass me (if there is room). If there is a parking lot, I will try to pull over and let them pass. I've even gone a different direction to get out of their way, because they're obviously more important than me (tongue in cheek).

I do the same as Lamb, if someone is tailgating me, and it's safe to do so, I make sure I'm not in the passing lane and slow right down.

I slow down. I don't care how slowly I have to go, sooner or later they will either take the hint and back off, or pass. I don't care which.

The idea behind the move is that if they are too close to stop at the speed you're going you slow down until the space they leave is a safe stopping distance. If that means 15mph, so be it.

It's very rare I've had to take things to that extreme but I remember one guy on a twisty windy road with high hedges on both sides (the sort that could easily have something unexpected around any one of the bends) who felt it necessary to drive so closely behind me I could lip-read him shouting at me. I just kept slowing down and he didn't take the hint until we were going less than 20mph.

IF possible and safe, I'll move into a slower lane. And if not, ignore the jerk.

This is one of the reasons why I bike. If someone is annoying I go bike on the grass.
