When you receive someone else's mail, what do you do with it?

If it is nearby I will walk it over to their house. If it is not then I put it back in the mailbox with the little flag up.

Depends what it is.

We periodically get mail for a particular person delivered to our mailbox. This person might have been the previous owner of the box but we've had the box for something like 15 years now. The first couple of times we gave it back to the staff but from what they said it was clear it was junk mail so now we just throw it in the recycling.

If it's clearly not junk mail we'll either return it to the post office staff or, if the office itself is closed, just write on the envelope that it was misdelivered and to try again, and put it back in the mail.

Depends on the item. If it is addressed to another person at our address, will write on it that the addressee is not at this address and put it back into the outgoing mail. If for a person with a different address, I put it in the outgoing mail.

I used to put it in my mailbox, but then they stopped picking it up. So I drop it into the nearest postbox, writing on it, "Return To Sender." Some people throw it out, but it could be important. I remember when everyone would go out of their way to help someone. I hope we can get back to it. "Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold." - Matthew 24:12

If it's a neighbor, I'll walk it to their house, but most of my neighbors aren't home during the day, so I'll just put it in their mailbox.

Yesterday I got mail for the previous owner that lived here 11 years ago and it looked really important. Her husband died 3 years ago, so I couldn't email him, and searched for her on Facebook and found her. I messaged her and now I'm waiting for her to respond, but since we aren't Facebook friends, it goes off into that little unknown area where people don't check. I told her if I don't hear from her by mid-August that I'll mark on the envelope to have it returned and that the person moved.

After 11 years I think I'd just mark it "gone away, return to sender" and put it back in the mail.

Our house used to be a rental before we bought it, so we get lots of mail for people that used to live at our address. Especially from bill collectors.

Hopefully that dies down in a year or two.

So the lady whose mail I received replied to me on Facebook saying she wanted me to mark it return to sender. I did that and then my husband saw in the email we get for mail delivery that they were going to bring it right back to me! What??? But it never made it here, so who knows which neighbor it actually went to or if they figured it out and sent it back to sender.
