When moving to another state, do you try to do it yourself or do you hire a company? Do you try to purge as much as possible beforehand?

We're thinking of moving to a different state when my husband retires, and I told him we should purge.

I’m planning on moving from California to Tennessee next year, which is a pretty big move for me. I don’t own any major assets other than a car. I calculated that I would actually save money by donating all of my stuff and buying it all over again when I get there instead of renting a truck to haul it across the country.

Tennessee is actually one of the states on our list! South Carolina is another but there are more, it's just that we have family in those states.

I'm trying to convince my husband to sell stuff, give stuff away and then buy as we need them. We don't need all the things he thinks we need.

We are planning on moving 1,300 miles away (thought it was 1k, it's 1300 lol) next year and based on what my friends did when they moved from here to there, we will be purging everything we can, renting a Uhaul for what's left and traveling ourselves. We don't have a whole lot now as it is, and getting rid of most of our furniture (since it's old and crappy anyway) will mean we probably won't need anything more than a medium-sized Uhaul. We'll probably get a friend or family member to drive one of our cars down so we don't have to tow one.

When we moved from North Iowa to South Texas, we downsized so we had to purge. Sold some, donated others. Didn't purge enough and as with life, more stuff added. At our age, purging is becoming a much needed thing to do frequently.

We usually packed ourselves. We have done U-Haul, professional movers and also where we packed and loaded and the company transported.
