At 2 am I heard a morning dove outside doing its little call...over and over and over again. I had a hard time getting back to sleep until it shut up about 2 hours later. And then it started up again around 6am.

How do you block out noise from outside when you sleep?

Earplugs. I use them to block out noise when I'm sleeping and when I'm operating power tools for any length of time. Some time I should probably get a pair of proper ear defenders for use with my power saws but for now I seldom use them for long enough to be overly concerned.

I've seen a style of earplugs that are intended for musicians playing at concerts. I think they have a titanium core with just enough foam so that they can be put in and taken out. I think they are expensive for earplugs - a regular set you can get at the hardware store is about 30c/pair but these are more like $50 if not more. But they last a lot longer.

Keep a fan on while I sleep: Like a white noise machine, having a fan on or air conditioning machine make a gentle hum can help you block out those external noises. You can even switch it up and use a space heater in the winter, so you keep warm at the same time!
