If I was being fired I'd let the company find out in its own time that they really shouldn't have fired me.

If I was being laid off it would depend on how well the company had treated me, and how easy it would be for them to find someone else to do the important thing.

The people who truly think the company cares about them are more likely to hand over their meal ticket for free. If the company does something stupid and ends up shooting itself in the foot you have an opportunity to make it right, for a price of course.
