What's better "vaporub" or a no-name chest rub that is cheaper by half or more?

I telephoned a local independent grocery shop today to ask for the price and availability of "black & gold" chest rub which is a no-name brand substitute for Vics Vaporub. The no name brand costs $2.30 for 100g while Vaporub is about $12 for 100g (I think that the vaporub price is shockingly high - it is probably price gouging by a major grocery chain because it is the depths of winter here). So ... What's better "vaporub" or a no-name chest rub that is cheaper by half or more?

chest rub is useful for many things I am told. Not all are to do with chest infections.

I'm assuming you must have a cold so I hope you feel better soon.
Name brands are usually more expensive because they are marked up more.
Just like when I worked in men's retail many years ago and the big names were marked up about 200% from their wholesale price.

At this point, you should be calling for "last rights". Neither Vaporub nor its substitute will help you now. :p

Probably the same. Look for the active medicinal ingredient and percent, along with non-active additives. If they both measure up, then I always buy the generic

I am hoping to receive "last rights" when the time comes - a happy death will be good when it comes.

I understand all those chest rubs are fairly worthless.... People feel better mostly because their chest was rubbed (lol) NOT because of what it was rubbed with.

Oh was it the menthol? I'd always put tooth paste in my nose, stuck it in w the back side of my tooth brush as a kid and then drink some water through my nose and it felt much better.
I have no idea how I got up w that weird idea, but it did help.

I once shot coca-cola through my nose when I laughed. That didn't help.
