What was your first job? What was the first day like for you?

My daughter has a new job starting today (not her first job though) and I'm excited for her. It's doing something that she didn't go to college for but learned how to do it through an internship. She didn't get paid for the internship and I told her that was a bad idea but I was wrong and now she's making good money because they gave her skills and experience to land this job that other people with masters degrees couldn't even get an interview for! Yay!

The first job that I got paid for was mowing lawns. I had a median that I mowed in my neighborhood every week and also some neighbors paid me to mow their lawns also. Other than that, I bagged groceries at a grocery store

My first job was babysitting the neighbor's daughter and I got paid 50 cent an hour for the first few months and then from there until the next few years it was a dollar an hour! :(

My next job was at a Department store and my first day was stressful because I was in an office with cranky old ladies.

Several times I have worked in department stores and always hated it, but I did like the employee discount

I delivered newspapers at the age of 8 or 9. After that I helped my folks build a house and then was held in child labour in the orchards for many, many years until I escaped by getting a job at the "seconds" store where my parents took their fruit. That was a fun job and I got to do not only store operations, but also the bookkeeping for it.

My first real job, I did work several different summer jobs, was at the steel mills.

My first day involved a tour of the mills with a bus load of new hires. We would stop at a building and we would all get a tour, the ones that would work for that department would go to the department’s office and get their schedule. When we arrived at my building, no one was allowed off the bus. There was no tour and only I got off the bus and they took me to the office. I looked in the building through a door that was left open and I saw nothing but I wasn't allowed to go in, it was totally dark. I got my schedule and the next day return alone using a steel mill shuttle. I was shown to a locker, handed fire retardant clothing, a helmet, a pair of safety glasses and fresh air equipment. After changing, I was led into the building, it was loud, it was dark, dirty, with graphite flying through the air. Sirens constantly going off, and I could see sparks here and there shooting into the air. The sound of the huge overhead cranes running on rails extremely noisy. I was handed a broom, told to stay between the yellow lines and sweep.

I was a waitress at a very busy rest stop restaurant on a major highway. One time a bus load of 25 people came into the restaurant. Lucky me got picked to be their waitress. The people were rude and complaining no matter how fast I was bringing out their orders. After they ate and paid the check, I was left $1 tip. The owner yelled and screamed at us all the time to speed up bringing food to the customers. The problem wasn't with us (the waitresses), it was with the cooks who were slow as molasses and constantly screwed up orders. I lasted a week and the total amount of money I made for that week (8 hour shift/5 days) was $130.00. (n)
