What was the sermon about in church?

If you go to a local church what did you pastor preach about this last Sunday? Where I attend now they are doing a series on "others' and the emphasis this week was on being humble based on Phil 2:3-4

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself, do not merely look out for your own person interests but also for the interests of others."

Matthew 14:22-33
Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost’ they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, ‘Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.’ It was Peter who answered. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water.’ ‘Come’ said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. ‘Lord! Save me!’ he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. ‘Man of little faith,’ he said ‘why did you doubt?’ And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God.’​

For many a sermon that is true. Spend the time daydreaming or crossword solving and it will be better spent

For me, going to church is about partaking of the very real body and blood of Christ, and not so much about what some person babbles about for a few minutes. A sermon is the least important part of what happens in church. In fact, it's never even listed in the Bible as one of the things that is supposed to happen in church.

I would strongly disagree with that. The sermon is part of the body of Christ edifying each other. Sharing God's Word and edifying and building each other up is spoken of in numerous parts of the Bible.

If the best you can say about your minister is that he babbles for a few minutes, maybe you need a different church. I can't imagine choosing one church over another if that was my opinion of the services.

Personally I prefer to think of the sermon in the light of 1Co 14:26 where, when we come together, we have (among other things) a teaching. When multiple people within the church have the opportunity to preach it gives people the chance to present the results of their own Bible study to the congregation.
