I've been really enjoying some interesting sermons by Jews on their traditional understanding of death.
They believe that babies in the womb are very very close to God, that as Spirits we are told a year in advance that we will be incarnated on Earth, imagine being in Heaven and then having to go to Earth in human form. The will to adjust to this fact takes a year to prepare for, and in the womb they are not alone but with God... They are comforted by Him and to the baby, the moments up to the birth is very intense and traumatizing but God comforts them, the Jew believes birth to be the death before life... interesting, anyway when someone has a NDE they are remembering birth all over again, and that's why they feel so peaceful being in Gods presence and they say that the great light they see that says "come" is actually the experience we had when we first came out of the womb..
They say that the reason spirit is so afraid of birth is because it will have to share with a human body which is believed to be like another soul.. However like in the image of Elohim, they likewise become creators of their own person.
The reason they say God created humans was to be recipients of his goodness, they say there is no reward for being a soul in Heaven without a human experience, like a hand out we as human feel ashamed because you did not earn it... the body and soul conjoin but only the body dies, the soul will not be judged until the resurrection with that body so they will be judged together.
One Rabbi gave a short story about a crippled man and a blind man stealing grapes from over a kings wall, when the king found out he asked them and the blind man said, "I cannot even see" and the crippled said "I can not climb" ... The king told the crippled man to stand on top of the blind mans shoulders and both were judged immediately...
This is how it is with your soul and body, the soul can say it was the body's fault, and the body can say it was the souls fault, thus God resurrects them as one to judge.
The Jews do not believe in Hell but they believe in Gahanna which is where those who are so attached to their body will suffer the experience of decomposition and they will have a terrible time getting used to the realm of souls but after time they will be perfectly in tune (sounds like Purgatory).
However there are a very very few that will never escape that torment because they can never deal with the guilt and pain they have caused on Earth.
The Jews also believe that for those who had a tough life never have the ability to walk with God will be reincarnated, but after they die they will remain souls for eternity instead of having a complete immortal body with it's eternal soul.
They believe that there is no death only a temporary death for the body, spiritual death is when the soul doesn't feed the body with Gods word and the body takes over with fleshly pleasures, self desires and self admiration, yet the soul is alive regardless of a human body.
Just thought I would share, I thought it was very interesting, if you want me to share the videos I will but they are lengthy, I use youtube speed adjustments to make it play faster...
