Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

How is this meditation different from the meditations that could harm our souls?

IMHO, the difference lies in thinking and saying. In harmful meditation there is an emptying of the mind/thoughts and repeating of certain arcane phrases. In Christian meditation we think and say the scriptures.

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

I will say that a part of hearing from God is emptying your mind so that you can recieve what God wishs to say to you and not be drowned out buy the world

I agree with this! I was taught to not empty my mind because of the bad that can enter in!

Christian meditation is to think on Christ. Ancient Israelite meditation was to think on the Law. The two are not as different as they sound. Christ is the New Law as the holy scriptures say. But now, in Christ Jesus, you, who were in times past far away, have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace. He made the two into one, by dissolving the intermediate wall of separation, of opposition, by his flesh, emptying the law of commandments by decree, so that he might join these two, in himself, into one new man, making peace and reconciling both to God, in one body, through the cross, destroying this opposition in himself. [Ephesians 2:13-16]
