To me it is showing respect because isn't God one of order and wanting worship to be about him? A church I attended used to be chaotic in nature and made me so uncomfortable to be there.

There are people who push the listen to God and that still small voice and yet the awful me noise is atrocious.

I'm watching Downton Abbey and the piece of art ^ was displayed and the gentleman noted that it showed different types of reverence; eager, contemplative, amazed. There is a magpie up on the roof of the nativity and it is known to be a noisy bird yet it's shown as being quiet.

That scene made me think of this thread and I thought I'd share.

I like churches that practice sacred space. It just feels more holy to me.

Reverence is approaching someone with the dignity and honor befitting who they are.

In the Catholic tradition, we distinguish between Latria, Dulia and Hyperdulia. Latria is adoration and reverence that is reserved only for God. Dulia and Hyperdulia are forms of reverence that are appropriate for, say the Saints. As we acknowledge that the Saints' relationship with Jesus was exceptional, and we can draw inspiration from their example on how to strengthen our own relationships with Jesus.
