I honestly believe that home schooling is the way to go. But in order to do so, your wife has to stay home. But in order for her to stay home, you have to pay all the bills yourself. And most jobs don’t pay well enough to do that.

You put this thread in the Christian Theology forum...does it deal with theology? If not, I can move it to a more appropriate thread.

As for my opinion, I always wanted to homeschool my daughter but she's a social creature and wanted to be around other kids. She actually begged to go to public school.

Here's how we were able to afford going down from 2 incomes to 1 once I got pregnant...

I had worked like crazy doing freelance for about 5 years before getting pregnant and I had a really high rate and made myself valuable to the companies who hired me. I worked harder than their full-time employees so they always asked me to return and even work overtime! So we saved up a lot of money to put into investments and start our nest egg.

It sometimes is cheaper to have a mortgage than to pay rent.

Childcare isn't cheap so when people think that the mom has work...it's sometimes more so that the woman doesn't stay home to deal with the children. I know quite a few moms who couldn't wait to get out of the house and preferred working to staying home with their kids.

Families don't need the best of technology...the best of cars, as long as the car is reliable it doesn't have to be a BMW, don't need the newest cell phone. For years I didn't even get a cell phone and only got one because I was going on a long road trip with my daughter and needed it for safety reasons. After that, I didn't have a smartphone for MANY years. Sacrifice is key in parenting.

Shop at Goodwill. It's okay to buy used clothing and at some Goodwill stores you'll find name brand clothing with the tags still on!

Cut out coupons, look for digital deals, don't always buy name brand and buy what's on sale. Stock up when you can on sale items.

Stop going to Starbucks.

Don't eat out but a few times a year. Cooking at home saves a ton of cash.

Control the thermostat so the bills are cheaper. Wear layers in the winter and use extra blankets.

Don't put your kid into every costly activity. They don't need to be so overwhelmed anyway.

There are so many ways that families can reduce to 1 income but they don't want to make any sacrifices because they're selfish and used to living a pampered life. That's my opinion and I think it might offend some people but I'm calling it as I see it. Yes, there are families who really need two incomes because of certain situations or circumstances but that's where they need to really learn about family planning.

I was home schooled through 8th grade, then a hybrid approach for high school (some home school, some college classes "double dipped" with credits toward both high school and college). My mother was a primary teacher but everything was coordinated via a Baptist school associated with a mega church in town (it supplied curriculum, it did testing and grading). The school required lots of community service (half of which could be through your church), physical education (I did swimming) and arts (I was in a theatre group).

I'm glad for that... but we aren't doing that for our boys, in spite of my wife being a certified school teacher. Our oldest goes to a Lutheran preschool and our plans are for both of them to attend a private Catholic school for K-8 (there are no Lutheran elementary schools here).

Blessings on your Lenten observation.

My daughter home schools and has a work from home job. While it may be harder to home school when both parent work outside the home, it can be done with lots of planning and scheduling.
