Ignorance is bliss only for those who take God at His Word, not for those who doubt the bible. Those who do the will of God w/o doubting have Him on faith, those who doubt His word have the onus on themselves to prove His Word wrong. But the question is interesting because it questions whether the law was in effect before Moses ...

I found the above quote very profound. It forced me to ask myself the question. Was the law in effect before Moses? And I had to go all the way back to the Garden. When I examine my own Christian walk and think about how Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, I am blown away by the awesomeness of the sacrifice of our Father in sending Lord Jesus into the world. Really, it is so very awesome amazing love:
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

When we consider how the Law accentuates our sin, and how perfectly the blood of Jesus removes sin from us, It is enough to make you want to sing and shout. :arms: and dance:dancing: .

Was there law before Moses? YES! God's word as expressed in the quote, taken as truth, imho is Law. The first Law:

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

So the Law was the command from God. The word of our Father is the law. Oh how disobedient we are! But complete obedience was so hard for man, even in his unfallen state. How much more so for fallen man? OOOH! BUT JESUS!!!!!!

Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

I thought the thread may have been about the first part of the quote abt the onus being on those who doubt the bible to prove it wrong. Those who doubt imho are those who have not done much research into it.

But this is good too, whether the Law has always been in effect. apollard used the example of the thought of lusting after women, whether one was accountable for the thought alone before Jesus stated the revision of the law.

A poll would have been good to see what others think. I have to think about it too, but I see how your pov works well with a yes, it's always been in effect.

Yes, another good thread. I will start another one about this as well.
But the idea that God is King and the King's word is law, that means every command from our Father is law, Right?

Absolutely. There's principles and there's precepts just as there's the law and there's the Holy Spirit guidance. I would think that those who are not under the Holy Spirit guidance are still under law .......

An answer to apollard's question would be in the convicting of the Holy Spirit whether one was aware of the revised law or not.

What I'm not certain of is about the state of those who lived between Noah and Moses

Great first post!

Yes, God's Law was in effect as you have written in the Garden. God gave His children His expectations of how they should live their lives, knowing they would fall. It's the same with us. He expects us to live by His law even though we can't be perfect.

When Israel demanded a king, Our Father was grieved at their rejection of Him as King. It seems that man has rejected the Heavenly Kingdom many times in the past. He said to Samuel
1 Samuel 8:7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

This imho is so sad.

In keeping with the character of God just from what one knows of Him then His demands of law went thru phases of responsiblity, so what was considered obedience at one point may not be at another. Dispensations I guess they could be called for lack of a better word. A gradual giving of the law before the Law of Moses came into effect perhaps.

The Laws that Moses gave were not in effect until Moses gave them. The Laws given by Moses express some principles that were in effect from the beginning. The principles that were in effect in Eden were few - obedience to the command given by God was one of them but God gave few commands in Eden. Later, after Cain had murdered Able God gave another command by example and word that taught people not to kill one another. Later still God gave another command through flood, word, and example that riotous godlessness would not be tolerated. After the flood God gave a command about food allowing Noah and his progeny to eat meat as well as plants. And by the time of the Exodus God gave a command by example and instruction that one day in seven was to be set aside as exceptional - the manna was given six days of the week and a double portion on the sixth day but none was given on the seventh day. Soon after God have the ten commandments on Mount Sinai and the rest of the Law through Moses. That is how I remember the slow development of law under the old covenants.

I don't have words but, I will try. When you think of the king, the king's word is the law. In the beginning it was be fruitful, multiply, replenish the Earth, don't eat from the tree of knowledge and evil, etc.Things were simple. Then, sin came and things got complicated. The people prior to the flood of Noah became totally corrupt until God was grieved that He had made man on the Earth.
Gen. 6: 6 And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Imagine how bad it must have been! It was so bad that
Gen. 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

I cannot imagine all of mankind thinking evil continually. But that is what happened.

Gen. 6:7 And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

Gen. 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted His way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

So the law (His way) was here but His way was corrupted. Man would not, did not yield to God as King, but, made themselves kings.

When you look at Noah, who found grace with God, we see that God gave Noah commands (Laws).

Gen. 7:5 And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.

After the flood, God once again blessed man with the same commands as He gave Adam.

Gen. 9: And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

But not long after the flood, people again, started to fall away from God's way. We read how Noah got drunk, Ham disrespected his father's nakedness, and so on, with Noah cursing his grand son etc.

Has anyone ever wondered why Noah only had three sons and why God chose Abraham? I have.

Noah's 3 sons became the different nations out which a part of one nation thru one man was chosen to produce His people. His people then bottleknecked into the good seed while the others withered away or became worldly or were lost to the cares of the world.

Too dramatic?

 No, not too dramatic. But, God gave the command (Law) for Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply. But Noah did not have any more children after the flood. Why?
