I have a Royal that is over 30 years old but I can't find parts for it anymore, so now I own a Pet Bissell and it's amazing. The power on that lightweight unit is better than my Royal, and that thing was good enough for commercial use!

I don't find a huge difference.

We currently have an Electrolux. I had a Dyson for 15 years and it did very well for most of that time. Towards the end of it things were starting to wear out and I couldn't get parts any more. It still worked, just not as well.

I also have a sub-$100 shop vac paired to a cyclonic separator I made out of a 5-gallon bucket. The separator shakes out most of the bigger stuff it sucks up, meaning I don't have to change the bag as often. It's more cumbersome to carry around because I never got around to building a single base for it, but works pretty well on hard floors. For carpet or rugs I'd go for the Electrolux or the Dyson, because they had brush bars that helped agitate the fibers and get the crud out.

I have some old thing from about 1989 when I got married. Same for washer, dryer and fridge. We bought a dishwasher a few years ago, a high end one too, and it can't dry the dishes without a surfactant to help water drain off of them. I suspect it is the EPA telling the MFRs they have to make them more energy efficient, and so the result is very limited drying capability. Never had that problem with my older dishwasher purchased in 2001. That experience makes me not want new anything, not even a car, they really have them screwed up, shutting off in traffic if you stop moving and all that nonsense. My mother-in-law went to assisted living a few years ago and I could have had the washer and dryer which were only a few years old, but then I saw a water hose from the washer to the dryer and that sealed my feelings that I don't want these machines as they are too complex with electronic this and that instead of simple dials and physical switches. I think the computer age is ruining many things that we had pretty well worked out. Kind of like my dad used to say if it isn't broke don't fix it, but they can't help putting frills on things to try to entice more people to give up a good thing for what they think is even better but not always the case.

Rant over. :D
