Tropical Storm Hermine

Tropical Storm Hermine is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to make landfall Thursday night along the Florida panhandle as a Category 1 hurricane. Hermine will bring heavy rain, storm surge flooding, high winds and even some tornadoes to not only Florida, but also the coastal Southeast.

The county I live in is on the eastern coast of Florida, and it at this point only under a tropical storm warning. We are expected to get 25-30 mpg winds and only 1-2 inches of rain. Some areas, on the Gulf Coast of Florida, are expecting up to 10 inches of rain, and a storm surge in the 4-6 ft. range.

As far as hurricanes go, this is looking to be a pretty mild one, but they can really strengthen way beyond forecasts, so I am going to be keeping my eye on this one in the next few days.

I now have supplies all in order for me and at my mother's, drinking water for several days, canned/packaged food and plenty of batteries in case we experience a lengthy power outage. I do want to stress that I am on the periphery of the expected storm conditions.

You know, I didn't realize it has been 11 years since there was a hurricane landfall in Florida.

Yes, they are saying around 3 am will be at its worst, and will be windy/rainy for about 12-14 hours. Right now it is calm with only a slight drizzle.

Absolutely nothing happened here...but I would like to thank the media for whipping my 78 year old mother into a near hysteria. Yeah, thanks for that. :banghead:

Poor mom! Yet it's better to be safe than sorry.

I have a friend who lives on a sailboat and they take hurricane forecasts very seriously! They really tie the boat down in a small cove when they hear something might approach and while other sailors might laugh, it's saved everything a few times while others wished they hadn't laughed.

Well, I would agree it is better to be safe than sorry, but she just goes into an absolute tizzy when there is 24 hour coverage of something on TV. I did my best yesterday to tell her we would have very little impact here, but she gets completely affected by a media bent on making everyone afraid and glued to their tubes. She is the type who jumps at her own shadow...it overwhelms me at times and I want to take her TV away. :smash:

Glad to hear the storm ended up not being as big a deal as first thought.

My wife is flying down to central Florida for the long weekend. Sounds like they are just expecting a lot of rain. I was going to go but I've been fighting a nasty virus for three weeks now and am just going to stay home and take it easy.

We want to go do Disney this winter but my mother insists they're closing down Florida. So watch out, Mark That Zika virus is shutting you down and you'll be stuck!
