Purge stuff you don't want, don't need and don't think you'll be using in the next 2 years!! We made the mistake of not purging enough stuff and it was awful with all the boxes we ended up with because we first moved into an apartment, then into this current house. The apartment was a 3 bedroom and it was packed with boxes, and a trail to get to each room. A friend thought she could stay with us, until she walked through and saw all those boxes. There was no room.

I do the purging BEFORE I move.... And have a professional inspector go over every inch of the new home before close of escrow.
Having taken possession.... just before moving into the new house, after coe, step one... call an exterminator. Have the whole place - inside and out - sprayed AND checked to make sure there are no "entry points" or places where bad can multiply and become a problem.

Try to give away or get rid of things you don't want to pack and move. I gave away about half my library last time I moved.
