Have you ever noticed the Jews kept the Law by doing nothing? The Law said don’t steal so they wouldn’t steal. Or it said don’t murder, so they wouldn’t murder. But Jesus gave us insight into how to keep the Law by keeping the two great commandments from where the Ten Commandments came.
That is the love of God and people with all our hearts. This would then amount to doing the opposite of what the Ten Commandments forbade. That is, according to the Two Great Commandments. Jesus taught the converse of the Law in the Sermon on the Mount. Instead of not stealing, love would give. Instead of not murdering, love would bless enemies instead. Try to think of the opposite of what the Law forbade. And then see it in scripture.
And this theme continued in the New Testament becoming our Christian ethics. Paul in Romans twelve and James in his epistle are rife with the principles of the Sermon on the Mount. The seasoned bible reader can spot the teachings of the Sermon readily, even where Jesus drew from the Old Testament.
