In theology these are regarded as serious faults that can lead to serious sins. But is that a sound assessment of them?
  1. gluttony
  2. envy
  3. lust
  4. greed
  5. pride
  6. wrath
  7. sloth

A modern non-christian perspective on these is given here

Gluttony appears to have been removed from the list.... at least by many contemporary Christians. Been to any "all-you-can-eat" buffets and witnessed the after-church crowd? Even noted too many Christian pastors? Ever been to a church potluck?

It not only seems to have been taken off the "Seven Deadly" list, but off the "wrong" list entirely. At least by some. It seems to be somethings many Christians quite approve of or at least "wink" at (if not commit themselves)....

I watched it.
It is contra-Biblical.

It denies the fundamental fallen nature of man clearly spoken of in scripture and urges an abandonment of guilt over our evil actions and emotions, rather it calls upon the world to embrace evil as good and to empower man to cure himself without a need for God. It sounds great, but it will not work. Either God is real and the bible is truth or He and it are not. I see no evidence to even remotely suggest that people are basically good and Scripture is fundamentally flawed in its perception of who man is and what he needs.

It is our cultural weakness. We have plenty so gluttony is our sin which so easily entangles. I have a friend who works internationally and he said that in parts of Africa the churches struggle with stealing. The basic idea of seeing, wanting and taking (envy? greed?) is rampant even in the local churches. It is a culture where the police extort bribes from visitors to survive and feed their families. He said that just as the US churches are blind to gluttony, these churches are culturally blind to greed and theft. He said it is hard to get too upset at some of the poorest people in the world stealing some money to survive from some of the richest. This does not make their action 'right', but it does make it their entangling sin just as we have ours.
