The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights were visible in my area early this morning, but I didn't look for them since I thought we were supposed to have clouds/rain. People posted photos online though and now I wish I had seen them.

Did you see them this morning? Have you ever witnessed them?

I saw some pictures showing them in London. I got a good view of them in Norway many years ago. They were beautiful.

A result of solar storms..... It's expected we'll have some significant ones this weekend.

This CAN be very, very serious. Our entire electrical grid and virtually all electronics (including satellites) are at risk of a major storm. Consider what would happen is virtually everything electric and electronic died... no electricity for weeks, perhaps months. No navigation satellites, no cell phones, no electricity in your home - for perhaps months. Can't use credit cards. Water and sewer facilities could be down for months. It all depends on how big the storm. Odds of something huge? Very small - but it's happened before (just before electricity was extensively used). And MOST of this COULD be mitigated... the electrical grid for example could be fitted so as to be safe from even the biggest solar storms, but it takes money. Banks have already taken measures to protect our records from damage but not from operations.

I had hoped to see them last night, but it was way too cloudy. All I saw outside was gray.
