"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." --Leviticus 17:11

I believe this is applicable to the New Testament as it is purely a statement of fact. The word life here is is the word for soul in Hebrew, nep̄eš. Note that in this verse, the two underlined words (life and soul) are both translated from nep̄eš.

This seems like serious business since the blood was poured out at the base of the alter in the Old Covenant, and in Revelation the souls of the martyrs were under (at the base of) the alter (Revelation 6:9).

So a couple of implications that I am not sure the meaning of but sometimes kids (I did it as a child and before I was a Christian) become blood brothers by cutting themselves and mixing their blood. This seems like a practice that would not be advised for Christians.

But the other implication is, what does this life/soul is in the blood mean for blood transfusions?

And I just thought of another implication, what does this mean so far as getting a vaccination, or shot, that contains deleterious materials such as mercury, or worse that contains tissue line from aborted babies.

I am not saying I am against blood transfusions, but am wondering what implications if any there are.
