When you take a pill and it says to take with a full glass of water (and usually states 6 or 8 ounces) do you do that? Or do you take a few sips of water...or (gasp) dry swallow?

I asked the question because my esophagus has gotten smaller so I want to make sure the pill doesn't get stuck there. So I force myself to drink more water when I need to take a pill.

Hm yes in that case I think it's smart to drink more.

Usually I'm okay with a dry swallow, depending on the size of the tablet. For gel-caps, I need water or they do get stuck, dissolve, and set my throat on fire - usually with Ibuprofen and the like.

Dry swallow sounds so sicko but yeah I kinda do that because I might not always have that water bottle in hand and still want to take my chill pill.

If the instructions include drinking a glass of water with the pill, it's because that pill needs water in your innards in order to work correctly. It's not just about aiding it in getting down your gullet. In that way, it's similar to the ones that need to be taken with food.

That's true. So do you drink a full glass with any pills you take then?

You should do exactly what it says on the bottle/packet the instructions are the for a reason, do what it says, drinking more water is good for your system anyway, there is no such thing to much water only to little .. I always do what is says or I could become ill as take so many now ..

I should clarify - I do a dry swallow as the meds I take dissolve quickly. I can get them down quicker that way as opposed to taking them with water. I have a bad gag reflex, and sometimes they don't go down as easy with water. I do drink enough water and other fluids for them to work, though.

Side note, it is possible to die by drinking too much water. You have to drink a vast amount, but it causes hyponatraemia which can be fatal.

I can't answer the OP because I've never seen that specific instruction on medication I've taken.

I usually try to at least keep within the spirit of the instructions, although a lot would depend on the nature of the pill.

So far the only pills I've had to deal with have been things like multivitamins, over-the-counter painkillers and occasional antibiotics for minor infections. With those I figure the instructions are there for a reason but it's probably not hugely important if they aren't followed to the letter. If I ever needed more heavy-duty pills for something then I'd be more inclined to follow the instructions closely. I remember years ago a family member was on some serious medication (I know it was some kind of cancer treatment) that had to be taken at specific times, with specific time gaps between this medication and that medication, and the hospital that prescribed them wanted the empty boxes back when they were done (apparently they had to be destroyed in a specific manner rather than just dumped in the trash).

I don't usually drink water unless I am working outside in the heat or exercising. I usually just drink whatever diet drink I am currently drinking when I take a pill. I don't ever take it dry

Oh my. Water is my lifeline :)

My cousin and I talked about this before but I don't remember drinking very much water when we were growing up. We didn't drink pop until we were teenagers really so it was Kool-Aid a lot of times or lemonade. Now I drink a LOT of water and wondered how I made it through a school day without my water bottle in my hand like it was when I worked!

On a long hike I struggle with water. Specifically it's hard to carry as much as I will need for the walk. Last time I took 7 pints and after 15 miles wished I'd taken more. The last pint was easy to eke out, the last three miles were almost entirely downhill, but I wish I'd had more along the way.

That's a lot of water intake! I have a Camelbak that I use for my hikes and love it. It holds a couple liters of water but I rarely fill it full. My hikes are definitely not as long as yours. I think I do 6 miles tops and that's not every time.
