Smoke Alarms did not sound

I'm in a complete state of panic after having my house filled from smoke by something burning in the oven and my smoke alarms never sounded the alarms even though the smoke was so thick I was coughing. My house has the smoke alarms that are hard-wired into the electrical system throughout the home and two of those have been replaced recently and the one nearest the kitchen sounded last week so I know it is working well enough for small puffs of smoke but now I know that the ones I have might not be fully capable. I am calling someone to take a trip to the hardware store to purchase a photo-electric dual sensor kind as a back up now after speaking with a trusted friend about the two types of alarms that exist and the kind I have were not reliable and the companies have lawsuits against them. Now isn't that a shame that I expect a device to do what it's delegated to do? My word!

Besides the smoke, is everything all right? I hate it when a product does not perform as advertised.

I'm glad you are okay....

Yeah, they SHOULD have worked! In my house, we have two - and the one near the kitchen is TOO sensitive and it can't be turned off in a false alarm, but better that than not working at all.

I hope the store can figure out the issue and help you...

Mine go off ALL THE TIME! It's like I have a chair ready when I cook pizza for that falling, burning cheese that sets off the alarms! Stay safe!

Yes, thank the Lord, there is no damage to my home or my health apart from the scare it gave me.

Thank you for the kind responses I have received here and I wanted to write now to say that I have bought a different kind of alarm that will be used as a back up and new batteries have replaced the old in the alarms that are hardwired. I feel safe once more.

I put a piece of masking tape on the batts and write the date, it makes it easier to know to change them at given intervals.
