In Luke chapter 12 the leper asks Jesus to make him clean 'if he will'. This echoes Gethsemane, where Jesus asks to be spared but adds the all important 'if it is thy will, not mine'.
Though sickness is never welcome, not to me anyway, I find in times of illness I grow most. I depend then on God's mercy. He can make us well, but surely we must humbly accept that only He can decide what is good for us. Paul wanted his 'thorn in the flesh' removed, but we gather it never was. He knew it kept him humbled.
In these times of covid and so many bad things going on, let us understand that our suffering brings us closer to our Lord and we grow spiritually in throwing ourselves at His feet. He who knew more pain than we ever shall.
Having said that, as I pray when I am unwell, I find such peace and renewed strength. He does hear our cries.
