Do you shave, and why?

I'm male, and nearly all my life I've shaved. I tried growing a beard once, but the growth wasn't moving in the direction I wanted (out instead of down) so I just gave up on being bearded and continued to shave. Every so many days, growth would happen and it would itch, so I'd shave again.

Today, I'm a bearded man that just trims his beard. It's easier than shaving. It's a little awkward drinking and eating, feeling hair there that one isn't accustomed to, but I'm sure after a while I'll get used to it. Or maybe I'll start shaving again, I don't know. If I do it will be with a straight razor, which I used after giving up on the safety kind. Those were a waste of money and not very effective.

Do you have an opinion on natural body hair - be it on a man's face, women's legs or elsewhere?

I shave my legs and armpits. It makes me feel cleaner in a way, even though that's nonsense.

As for me, I prefer no facial hair and baby smooth. My husband has Italian ancestry, so he gets a five o'clock shadow about an hour after shaving.

I shave because it looks better than stubble and better than a beard that is not filling on the sides. Had a goatee once but in mid-summer my chin was sweating under it so I shaved it off for good. Also, even if it would fill in, I am not sure I want all that extra hair. Might be good in winter, but not summer.

I maintained a goatee from my 20s. After the post-2008 crash gathered steam I let the sides grow in because I was between contracts and decided to see how it might look, without the pressure to be at least broadly presentable at work. I've experimented with different shapes to my beard now but overall have kept it for the last decade or so.

It's much easier using a trimmer to trim off the stubble in areas I don't want growing out, than to use a blade to try and get everything. I really don't miss shaving.

It does seem strange to have some aftershave that's 35 years old, simply because I really have no need to use it any more. But these days it's called a "fragrance" so maybe there's no expectation to shave before using aftershave any more.

I could not grow a beard if my life depended on it.....

I could get away by shaving once a week.... especially since I'm very light skinned and my "beard" is blonde - it doesn't show at all, and it's really just "peach fuzz." I shave pretty much every-other day however just to look neat.

I have a goatee, but shave around that. I use a double-sided safety razor, a shaving brush, and a puck of solid shaving cream. I shave every other night. Women's legs should be free of hair, we're not living in France.

I'm finding having a beard suits me. Mustache was getting a bit long, overlapping my lip, and was getting little bits of food in it when I ate. I trimmed it today and some other bits and am happy. I still might go back to shaving, but so far this beard business is easier. A little trim every few weeks is far easier than shaving it all.

Ah, I didn't answer my own question about other body hair. Especially with regards to women. I remember going to some public places in summer and seeing some French women who didn't shave and thought it was gross. I was very young at the time. I see this as mostly cultural conditioning, now. I could get used to it. :p
