What is the main point of the Sermon on the Mount?
I believe the main point of the Sermon on the Mount is that it contains the Laws for the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matt. 5:3) (Matt. 5:10) (Matt. 5:19) (Matt. 5:20) etc. etc. etc.
The question one must ask, is, 'What is the Kingdom of Heaven'? The Sermon on the Mount is found in (Matt. 5-7)
The Sermon on the Mount is nothing but law. It doesn't speak of faith in Christ or the New Birth. The Sermon on the Mount is not describing how we are saved and go to heaven.
The Sermon on the Mount describes the laws of the Kingdom that is yet future. It is the Kingdom Christ came to establish with Israel. (Matt. 3:1-2) (Matt. 4:17) (Matt. 10:5-7)
That Kingdom is now 'future' because Israel, to whom it was offered, rejected the King and in so doing, rejected the Kingdom. The Kingdom was taken away from Israel, for now. (Acts 1:6-7)
So, how one defines the 'Kingdom of Heaven' will certainly affect how they view the Sermon on the Mount.
