We all know about platforms like WordPress, Wix and Shopify that makes it super easy to build and host a website really quickly. But have you ever considered self-hosting your website? This is where you would buy hosting, download software, set up it and manage everything yourself. There are several benefits but also a few cons like not having as much support from the host for specific software. Have you done this before?

I wrote my own online photo gallery because I didn't like any of the commercial ones. Sadly the company I had hosted it with managed to not only delete my entire site but also trashed all the backups, so I can't show it to you. I still have the code but when I moved to another hosting company I never got around to putting everything back in place.

I wouldn't write my own code for ecommerce, simply because I'd rather not deal with responsibility for handling credit card information. That's something I'd look to integrate with something like Square or Paypal. At some point I need to look into things like cURL to figure out how to make that happen. Just one of many things on the "to do, some day" list.

From the starting I was using only self hosted sites, since they belong to us and we can carry them whenever we want, unlike the one who gives space have to rely on them. These free site providers give major problems where they keep their own ads and most of them move from our forums to their forums instead of staying with us.
