Jesus said: “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.” John 4:22
Paul says: “And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root [Israel], but the root thee.” Romans 11:17–18
So even today salvation is of the Jews. Not of those broken off from Israel in unbelief. But the Israel of God who walk accordingly. “Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.” Galatians 6:16 (NIV)
Jesus is Israel personified in the NT and the Church of believers are His body. Hosea 11:1 says: “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, And called my son out of Egypt.”
Matthew finishes the revelation by saying: “When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.” Matthew 2:14–15
Colossians 1:18 says: “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” Jesus and the Church are Israel.
So what are we to make of those who say salvation is for every person ever born? Quoting as a proof text: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16?
If we first consider God’s promise to Abraham. That in him all the world or, all the nations of the world would be blessed. And further compare Paul’s teaching that God removed the unbelieving from Israel and added believing gentiles in their place (Romans 11:17), we limit Christ’s death and salvation to the believers from around the world grafted into Israel. And this not of themselves but only those whom God appoints to salvation: “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;” Philippians 1:29 (KJV 1900)
The capstone scripture proving this is: “…the Lord added to the church [Israel] daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47 Paul also says: “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” Acts 20:28
God says of Israel: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth: Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” Amos 3:2. So scripture shows that God damned all but Israel. This places serious limits on John 3:16 and directs it back to Abraham’s promise.
Even today, Jesus paid only for the sins of Israel. The Jew and Gentile believers whom the Holy Spirit adds to the church every day.
“But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” Romans 2:29
