Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The gospel of Christ is the progressive revelation of God reconciling heaven and earth to himself through Christ Jesus (Colossians 1:20). It was revealed in the law and the prophets and in the mystery revealed to Paul (Romans 16:25-26). It was manifested first to the Jew and also to the Gentile.

1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

The righteousness of God is revealed from faith which leads to saving faith.

1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Revealed is the wrath of God.

2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

Paul is saying that there is none who judge others for unrighteousness that will be excused and escape judgment.

2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

2:10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

The verses above are describing the righteous judgment of God, how God will judge according to our deeds. I see nothing in these verses to think we have to secure our salvation by doing good. Romans 2:5 gives the context for these verses by saying that wrath is being stored up for the day of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God. We do not have to work for our salvation ; God justifies the ungodly (Romans 4:5).

2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

God will not show favour in judgment, but will judge the Gentile and the Jew alike.

2:17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

2:25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Being a circumcised Jew has profit only if the law is kept.

2:28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

A Jew is one that inwardly has faith and is circumcised in the heart.

The church, the body of Christ is not spiritual Israel, but a new creature (Galatians 6:15), one new man (Ephesians 2:15), in which there is neither Jew nor Greek (Galatians 3:28).

3:9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

There is none who will escape the wrath of God in judgment, neither Jew nor Gentile, for all have sinned.

3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

If one did good they would be rewarded accordingly with honour and eternal life (Romans 2:10), but it has been established that there is none who do good. There is none who will escape wrath.

3:21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

But now God has made a way to escape wrath; by believing in Christ Jesus, his redemption (Romans 3:24) and his imputed righteousness (Romans 4:24).
