On todays date, March 6, in 1836, the Alamo fell. All it's defenders, some 185, were killed and stacked into a pile and burned. They were up against impossible odds, Santa Anna having some 2 to 4 thousand men. No one knows the exact number.

A little history. The white settlers came to Mexico under Colonization agreements with Mexico. These agreements took place and were based on Mexico's Constitution of 1824. Santa Anna became President of Mexico and then abolished the Constitution of 1824 and set himself up as dictator. This created civil war in Mexico.

Once Santa Anna put down the rebellion in the South, he turned his attention to the North where the white colonies were located. Santa Anna took away much of the freedoms that colonist's had under the Constitution of 1824, which is what their Colony was based upon . So they refused Santa Anna's effort to take away their freedoms under that Constitution.

The Colonists, though white, were Mexican citizens. They were fighting against Santa Anna just as many Mexicans were fighting against him also. The flag over the Alamo was the Mexican flag without the eagle and snake emblem in the center. Instead, the date 1824 written.

The Alamo was a Pyrrhic victory for Santa Anna. He had between some 600 to 1000 men killed. No one knows for sure. But I believe also, this battle had a psychological impact on Santa Anna's men. To see the small amount of white defenders, and then see their loses laying all over would be very depressing. And I think this is why Santa Anna had the bodies burned. He wanted to remove the contrast. The victory was felt like a defeat to his men.

Thus a little over a month later at San Jacinto, Sam Houston with a force of some 900 men caught Santa Anna by surprise. And with the battle cry of 'Remember the Alamo, and Remember Goliad', Houston routed his army, killing some 600, and the Texans lost only 8 men. Probably the most lopsided victory in history. And Texas would now be it's own country. And Texas is the only State where outside government buildings where the U.S. flag and Texas flag fly, the Texas flag is to be at the same height as the U.S. flag. Not lower.

So, Remember The Alamo.
