The pilgrim fathers - who some say were the founders of the American colonies which became the seeds of the USA - were economic refugees from Holland. Many were from England and had settled in Holland for religious freedom from the Anglican Church which they despised. When wool prices slumped in Holland the English refugees were impoverished and fled to the Americas for economic reasons. So, from a certain point of view the USA is a economic refugee nation.
