We have a Jeep Cherokee Latitude and it's almost ready to be declared a lemon. All we need is one more transmission failure (yes, one MORE).

My husband would like a pick up truck when it's time to replace the Jeep but I don't want a full size since we used to have a Ford F-150 and I called it "The Beast". I could park it but couldn't open the doors to get out because the parking spots were too small! LOL

So what do you recommend for us?

My Ford Ranger is a good truck but I don't think they make them anymore. What age are you talking about, new?

Yes, brand new. My husband likes Toyota brand vehicles but I bet their pick ups are out of our price range!

A Toyota Tacoma? They look pretty nice and are more forgiving on gas mileage than the Tundra.

An acquaintance has had one for a few months now. She likes it better than her previous car. I think she gets about 17mpg, where her old big SUV got closer to 12.

The Tundra looks like it's all but indestructible but you're doing well to get 17mpg on the highway, from what I gather.

My son drives a Tundra and he likes it a lot for mpg. I never asked him how many he gets. I like it too but it is just hard to climb up into./ LOL!

IIRC the Tundra is rated something like 12/17 for gas. I wouldn't want that unless I really needed a pickup that size.

Ford Rangers are what I like to call a ladies truck. Very easy handling :) Apparently 2019 they'll be bringing out a new line of Rangers. That would be my pick, but a Dodge Ram is prolly the safest truck to have on the road. Very hard on gas tho.

The Tundra is full size and we want compact. Dodge Ram is also full size. We looked at those before we bought the Ford F-150 a long time ago but the salesman was too much of a stereotypical salesman and we couldn't handle that and walked out. "What will it take to get your business?" I hate that question.

The Ford Ranger's new design really looks good. Fords aren't too bad for trucks, ours was pretty reliable.

The Colorado or GMC equivalent is a midsized good looking capable pickup. Nissan frontier may be a little cheaper than a Toyota Tacoma and too is Japan made soooo....Good stuff.

GM has really stepped up their game in the last ten years though and supporting our economy is always a good thing too.

Try googling top midsized trucks and see what you get.

Just suggestions.

It would be wise to check out the Frontier, we just bought a Rogue last fall and Nissan makes a solid vehicle. We were also able to get 0% financing through them which sealed the deal.

I've always personally been a big Nissan fan but given the current economic climate of our country and the increased quality of us-made products I personally would feel inclined to at least inquire about GM's and Dodges. Sure if it's still make the Dakota or not.

According to Consumer Reports, reliability varies a lot by brand.

Makes that generally have good reliability: Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, Kia, Audi, Buick, Hyundai. (Best is Lexus)
Makes that generally have bad reliability: Volvo, Lincoln, Cadillac, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Mini, Jaguar, Dodge, Land Rover, Jeep, Fiat. (Two worse are Fiat and Jeep)

Honda Ridgeline placed high in rankings with sleek line style but all you get is a v6 engine which ain't much power for a truck.

THE most American car sold in the USA is a Toyota Camry. It has a higher percentage of US made parts than any other car sold here, and 100% are fully assembled in the USA.

Years ago, my parents owned a Chrysler. Most people think Chrysler is American. But the car's mechanics (Engine, transmission, etc.) were Mitsubishi from Japan, most of the other parts were made in Mexico (even including the tires), and the car was assembled in Canada. And in those days, Chrysler Corp. was owned my a German company (Mercedes Benz) - it's now owned by an Italian company (Fiat).

Interesting world we live in...
