Pension options?

What advice would you give to someone who is planning their retirement and considering pension options?

Personally, I'd say not to trust anything run by the government. Chances are the rules will change and whatever you thought you'd get will end up being a lot more than you actually get. It's all very well to get a tax deferment for now but you never know if it will bite you later.

I like investments that I can control and that I can draw down or transfer at any time, and that don't need to jump through hoops that governments may change.
