I'm getting a new computer soon and am wondering is there a way to transfer files directly from one computer to another?

I don't know if there is a way to transfer directly...I just use an external hard drive and that's my back up for my files anyway.

Take the hard drive out of the old computer. Connect it to the new computer. Copy the files.

Make sure you don't have a buildup of static before handling the insides of the computer. If you leave it plugged in to a grounded socket and touch the metal of the case you can ground yourself and discharge any static.

If you have a home network you can copy the files over the network.
