NameDrop allows iPhone and Apple Watch users with the iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1 system updates to easily exchange contact information by simply holding the devices near each other. NameDrop then gives you two options: “receive only” or “share.” Tapping on “receive only” lets you take the other person’s contact information without giving them your own information. The “sharing” option allows both parties to give and receive the contact information you’d like the other person to have, such as your phone number or email address.

I think the default should be in the off position. If you want to use NameDrop, you should have to turn it on.

What are your thoughts on this NameDrop feature?

Name drop works like AirDrop and Password Sharing. Both phones need to be in proximity to each other and turned one. One taps to share their contact and the other must accept or reject the contact. Both people are active participants. It doesn't just happen as the media wants you to believe.

Sounds like the early days of Bluetooth when you could send stuff to random people because most people didn't turn it off on their phones.

Some days I'd pass the time on a long train ride by seeing what Bluetooth devices were nearby and sending them a "contact". It didn't take long to figure out which Bluetooth name corresponded with which actual person on the train, and nobody had any idea where the messages were coming from.
