The father of the esteemed MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. was born in 1890, the son of a Baptist minister, and was named Michael King.

When his son was born in 1929, he was given the name of Michel King, Jr.

But Michael King SR so admired Martin Luther that on April 12, 1934 (when he was 44 years old) he LEGALLY changed his name from Michael King to Martin Luther King. And at the same time, legally changed the name of his son from Michael King, Jr. to Martin Luther King, Jr. (he even changed his birth certificate, crossing out "Michael" and writing in "Martin Luther."

Everyone knows his name.... but not the origin of it.
