Military Recruiting in high schools in the US

Yes, I know we need men to sign up for the military and protect our country and I greatly appreciate their services and the mourn the lives lost.

I'm concerned about the practice of the recruiting in the high schools and how they make it sound so wonderful and glorious! Then they get shipped off to Afghanistan and Iraq and live in horrendous conditions without enough supplies and constant fear for their lives. It seems so bait and switch.

The military can be a wonderful experience or it can be awful, depending. Personally I think all young men should be made to serve, I think it would lead to a few less problems with the young

I'm not saying men shouldn't join. What I meant in my initial post was how the recruiters make it sound as if it's such a wonderful experience and how glorious it is yet once they enlist, it's not all that dreamy experience they were sold on.

That is true. And that is why my husband didn't have that experience.
He was told from God to join so he did.

it boggles my mind how our military is treated by our government.....they (the army/government) have a lot of nerve, trying to recruit from high school......

the government uses them up and then just tosses them aside like a used rag, and to add insult to injury doesn't even provide proper medical care for our wounded veterans...it's as if our wounded warriors are compelled to "beg" for what is ALREADY "due" them.

It galls me.

Proper medical care...don't get me started!!! They have veteran's hospitals, but oh, the horror stories!!

Oh that make me sooooooooo mad as well. My husband who WAS n Iraq in from 2010 to 2011 and the military/VA can't find any record of him being there!! Oh boy are we mad!! As he has anxiety and some depression and he can't get help cause they have no proof.

While there are some problems with the military and how vets are treated, enlisting while in high school was good for my son. You see, he had so many directions he wanted to go and couldn't decided on any. Plus, he was rather burned out on school as he is dyslexic and had to work rather hard to make grades, he was never an A student, though he was rather intelligent. His time in the military showed him that he could excel at his job (He was in intelligence) as well as gave him time to figure out what he wanted to do when he grew up. He has out of active duty and is about ready to totally separate from the Army in August when his total of 8 years is up. He is now a successful college student with an interesting career path ahead of him.

I can understand that but they give you packets and other things to read and if your are not old enough yet you have to have your parents permission to join so I think most people who want to join either wanted to join for a long time or either has a family or friend in the military.

There's no difference between a recruiter going to a high school and telling students about the military, and student going to a recruiter on their own. They will get told the same things.

There are a few issues with making people serve; though. First the United States prides itself on having an all volunteer force and requiring service well would end that. Second, remember we are paying for all those people base pay, housing, food, training before they even fight basic and advanced. Lastly, and maybe many would say most importantly if I am fighting and putting my life on the line would I REALLY want to be doing it next to someone who was not all there who did not want to be serving no.

yes, question is do the recruiters play it up too much? Do they only tell the "good" parts of the military? Are they ethical in seeking recruits? I can go somewhere on my own free will that does not mean that a person is going to be honest with me when I get there.

During Vietnam they didnt have problems with any of that mainly because of the training and of course the discipline. It would not hurt anyone to be in the service.

Yes, but in addition back in Vietnam the training was shorter. Today BASIC runs between 8.5 and 12 weeks and then advanced training runs from a few weeks all the way up to more than a year. All the while paying for those people and all that goes with it. If you asks me they need to COMPLETELY drop the draft go VOLUNTEER all the way no selective service no nothing.

Just a note as well only roughly a QUARTER of American youth ( male and female) of draft age qualify for military service without a waiver.

Wonder why? In the old days that was an answer for youth who got in trouble and it helped turn a lot around
