The principal of Florida’s Tallahassee Classical School is out of a job after parents complained that their sixth-grade children were shown Michelangelo’s 16th century “David” sculpture, with one parent calling it “pornographic,” the Tallahassee Democrat first reported.

Do you think the principal did anything wrong?

Was it necessary for him to show that specific piece of art? No. He should have taken into consideration that not all children should be forced to view everything because it's "art". Even in high school in my Art Appreciation class I was embarrassed to see nude paintings we studied. I wouldn't have wanted to have seen it at the age of 12. There are many other great works by Michelangelo that could have been shown.

Here‘s the problem...

"Due to “a series of miscommunications,” the letter did not go out to the sixth-grade parents, and some complained, Carrasquilla said."

On the one hand....

I don't agree that the statue is "pornography." As I understand it, the legal definition of such is that it is sexual in nature and sexually suggestive. Nudity, per se, is not porn. This art is amazing and considered one of the finest works of sculpture in the world. LOTS of people (including kids) visit it in person each year as such. Consider how much classic art involves nudity .... Christians who lived in a far more conservative society had no problems with this - even in church, with LOTS of little kids viewing it.

On the other hand....

The protesters do have a (tiny) point: There IS a LOT of very, very fine art that the 6th graders could have examined that doesn't involve nudity. And the teacher (and principal) might have used better judgement by using that;.

But all-in-all, I think the reaction to this was WAY out of proportion. The firings were way out of line. Better judgement could have been used perhaps but nothing to remotely suggest the reaction here. I support the social conservatism movement, including in schools, but this went too far.

Blessings on your Holy Week.
