Saint Paul says that man is justified by faith and freely. The faithful are said to be justified by faith, because faith is the beginning of human salvation, the foundation, and the root of Justification. Without faith it is impossible to please God, and to come into the fellowship of His holy people. The faithful are therefore said to be justified freely, because none of the things which precede justification - whether faith or good works - merit the grace of justification. Because, if it is a grace, it is not by works, otherwise grace is not grace.
