Luke 1:13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
1:16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
John the Baptist was the messanger to prepare the way of the Lord (Luke 1:76 Isaiah 40:3).
John the Baptist would identify Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God to the children of Israel (John 1:29 John 1:31 John 1:34).
John the Baptist would preach repentance to Israel and baptism for the remission of sins (Acts 13:24). Israel was to repent and become a fruitful nation (Matthew 3:10 Luke 3:8). Baptism would cleanse Israel from sin to purify them as priests in the coming Davidic kingdom (Exodus 29:4 Numbers 19:20 Ezekiel 36:25 Revelation 5:10). Israel was to be righteous before God in order to enter into the coming Davidic kingdom on earth and reign with Christ (Matthew 5:20 Revelation 20:4).
