When is the last time you went to the mall?

The nearest indoor mall is 45 minutes from my house. I'm thinking of going there today, but they don't open until 11am so I have to wait.

Our mall is frankly pathetic. It used to be a good place to go and shop and a nice place to just hang out for a while. Now it's a joke - most of the larger stores have gone, at least half of it is empty and more often than not there are more staff than customers.

The only reason we ever go there is because there's a shoe shop that has a good selection and a place my wife likes to go to get soaps.

There's a huge indoor mall very close to where we live. At one time, it had 6 major department stores (2 or 3 stories each) and hundreds of other stores. But I think maybe 20 years ago or so, it went into a major decline. Stores started closing... vacancies began to be obvious... a couple of the big department stores went empty. And it wasn't being maintained well. It definitely felt dying, something of the past.

Maybe 5 years ago, it was bought by some Canadian company and they completely remodeled the entire mall. Looks great now. There are still a lot of vacancies, however. One of the abandoned department stores is now a fitness center and movie theatre but the other is still empty. Two or three major, large restaurants have opened there. It NOW presents itself not so much as a "shopping center" as an "entertainment center" and "gathering place."

I can't remember. I tend to avoid the mall.

Today. It's a 5 or 10 minute bike from here.
