James 3:1 is translated in this manner

In the NIV it says
"Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly."

IN the NASV it says
Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

In the KJV is says
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

KJV seems to be very different than the NIV or NASV

The word Masters in the KJV is "didaskalos" transliterated which means a teacher, one who teaches the things of God
The words "we shall receive" is the transliterated word "lambano" to take with the hand and is translated received (133X) and taken (106x)
The word "The greater" is "meizon" which means greater, larger, elder or stronger
Condemnation is the word "krima" means a decree or judgment.

So, it seems that this verse is saying that those who teach the Word of God will be judged more strictly by what that person is teaching. If that person is teaching error or if that person is teaching truth. If that person is pointing others to Christ or pointing to something else even good things such as family, money or health and prosperity. God will have the final say about the reward that each teacher gets.

Therefore, James exhorts that not "many of you should presume to be teachers".

Amen.

Just posted in the Biblical Repentance thread on this very verse you mentioned here.

Amen.

That is why I aim to ever be Truthful is what I teach. As James wrote - "My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment." (Jam 3:1)

There is a romance to ministry that many desire, and get into without having been called of the Lord. The Lord God speaks of this in His Word and warns His people specifically not to listen to those behind the pulpits who preach that there is no need for real Repentance and that God will love us anyway even if we continue to slip up -

"Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.
They make you worthless;
They speak a vision of their own heart,
Not from the mouth of the Lord.
17 They continually say to those who despise Me,
‘The Lord has said, “You shall have peace” ’;
And to everyone who walks according to the dictates of his own heart, they say,
‘No evil shall come upon you.’ ”

18 For who has stood in the counsel of the Lord,
And has perceived and heard His word?
Who has marked His word and heard it?"

- Jer 23:16-18

How many preachers & pastors today have truly heard the Lord telling them what to teach? Is the Lord God instructing them to tell His people not to worry because they are 'saved' and He sees them through Christ? Or is He telling them to counsel His people to "repent" and "walk worthy" that they may inherit His promises given only to "those who overcome"?

“I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran.
I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in My counsel,
And had caused My people to hear My words,
Then they would have turned them from their evil way
And from the evil of their doings."
(caused them to repent)
- Jer 23:21-22

But Praise His Name, His Truth will always come forth. Indeed His promise is to bring to His Elect those who will indeed preach Truth and impart instruction that if followed will bring Life.

"I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking,” says the Lord." - Jer 23:4

Amen.

I think if people truly took this scripture seriously less people would enter into the teaching and preaching ministry like it was just another occupation
